It's far cheaper to buy a breadboard than it is to build one. That said, for what to use the breadboard for, well, it's for prototyping/debugging circuits, and that is something you have to decide for yourself. Most people make something that they would find useful for something or for a quick and dirty build that may be made cleaner at some point with a home etched board.
Headphone amplifier
LED + button
Button + buzzer
home built MP3 player
Etc.

Really....??
A)  The first pic will be interesting to breadboard.
Use one 9VDC battery and
connector ( take care with the+ red wire and - black wire of the battery )
R1 is 50 ohms ¼ watt, R2 is 470 ohms ¼ watt, a Blue LED, a Red LED,
some hookup wire and a Single Pole Double Throw ( SPDT ) switch.
Available from any Radio Shack store.

B)  Something a little more involved ?  Pic two uses the same single 9VDC,
Two Integrated Circuits ( ICs ). The LM555 timer and the CD4017 counter.
some red LEDs, resistors, etc ( values in the pic)

C)  How about a the last one you could use White LEDs placed every 45º
and simulate a rotating light.

Have Fun !!!

Circuit design breadboards are generally not something you make but something you buy.

Almost any circuit can be built in "breadboard" form. Try looking at the electronics Instructables, pick one that you'd like to build, and figure out how you want to lay it out on the breadboard...
