Webcam + Arduino portable security camera? Answered

I've never used Arduinos before but I think it would be a cool project to make a mini security camera using a webcam that would plug into some type of Arduino shield to hold video memory.  Is this possible?  What parts would I need?  Thanks.

I had a similar idea. I was thinking along the lines of using the ethernet sheild, linking it to a private twitter account and having it transmit video when the sensor is tripped via Twitcam. This way you can transmit video straight to your smartphone in the event that the sensor it tripped, view the video feed, then de-activate the camera with a twitter reply command if its a false alarm.

Exactly what Rick says. I'd only add that a USB camera is known as a "slave". It has to be connected to a USB "master", and an Arduino cannot act as a master.

You MIGHT get further with an "Mbed" - with a full blown ARM processor on it.

This has been asked before.

1. Video processing and video storing is really really difficult.
2. your lack of experience is going to mean a really really steep learning curve.
3. the cost outweighs the reality of buying a commercial product that does just that.
4. A web cam is intended to be connected to a PC of some kind - they are numerous programs out there that can read the web cam and stream the data onto the web for remote viewing or storage.
