What is the best 10mm LED light for distance? Answered

I'm making a LED torch and i have purchased some 290000 mcd LED lights.I think i will put them in a ring inside the torch which will allow me to see clearly in front of me.Then i thought i could put a long distance light in the middle would allow me to see out further  but i am unsure of what LED light is best for this task.Basically i am after a LED light that shines really far.

Get a bright narrow angle LED, here, the narrower the better.

Narrow angle remember - Google "super bright leds"

Is this light any good?

Its "bright", but the viewing angle is 90 degrees. You want the same lumens, but more candela, or you want to add one of these. http://www.superbrightleds.com/moreinfo/component-leds/cree-xr-series-xlamp-lens/330/

Adding a lens to the LED is a VERY good way to get more bang for very little actual buck. If you take a 90 deg beam, and squirt it out as a 15 deg beam, it will be 36 x "brighter" - since the area illuminated by the beam is 36 x smaller.

Not really, only what I have for what I use and I've not built powerful lamps/torches.

That looks like a nice LED light what is it and where do you get it?

how far does this light go clearly do you think?

I can plink reflectors across the street.

Brighter = further as long as the beam is narrow. hence Steve and Iceng advice.

I believe it may be worth experimenting with a cheap LED with flattening the end almost to the die (the bit that is the LED) The polish the end smooth and put a standard lense in from for focus.

DO AT YOUR OWN RISK with costly high power LEDS as I have not tied this.

There are LED suppliers that supply lens kits to go with LEDs.
