Where is everybody? Answered

Where did everybody go? It seems like everything has slowed down on here... not many interesting new instructables... and even the interesting forum posts are starting to thin out. Whats the deal?

I'm here, I've stopped all of my projects right now cause I have to finish my 2 wooden grandfather clocks in like 2 or 3 weeks and I'm stressing out. Out of all the people in my group I get to make the gearboxes, yay...

Well you have one of the most important parts and if someone who wasn't very good at building was making them it may not work.

user

yeppers, I had to make them because I was the only person in the whole group (5 people) who knew how to make gearboxes (like had experience). I tell you, mating up homemade wooden gears is a nightmare. a ratchet gear (for the winding mechanism) snapped, so I had to super glue it back together and now my hands are all wierd, fun...

It must be extremely difficult making every tooth exactly the same as all of the others and then having to make it match another gear!

well, we made gear templates and they all match up pretty well, not perfectly and you have to file down some parts. Making the tiny 10 teeth gear is scary with a jijgsaw.

I would be too worried that I might mess them up.

Our group was like that in the begining, but after the first one was really easy. For all the gears (except the tiny 10 tooth) we used a bandsaw. Cutting a crude circle around the whole thing, and then cutting little triangles into the gear. That way there's no really sharp turning. we got good at it (but boring), eventually about 10 teeth a minute.

There's often a lull after the end of a competition, plus I think a few regulars are having to deal with a greater workload from school (which is what I think Pat may have meant).

Plus, I think we are still suffering a loss through the absence of lemonie & LasVegas. I heard Lemonie was having access problems, but LV seems to have dropped off the planet ...

As far as the current rush of non-ibles, partly that's the fault of the Yarn slideshow competition, and (hopefully) a case of novelty - when people realise that the best stuff in in proper 'ibles, and that creating proper 'ibles gives you more credibility as a member, then maybe they'll slow down.

(I've just thought of a forum thread...)

BTW, Kiteman, now would be the time to release all those great ibles that you have lying about.

Alas, I also have new-term-itis, so I'm restricted to weekends for major jobs. I've just had an idea that will have to wait until after Easter because I need the weather, and other things high on my to-do list are also fairly demanding time-wise. I'm bracing myself for the coming speed contest, though.

LV is around, I saw something from him, somewhere, about a week ago. I'm busy with school, I never would have figured going full time would actually be harder than going part time and working full time, but it is. I've mapped out a great new project in my head I'm going to try, nothing groundbreaking, but cool and cheap. Cheap now being the operative word since I'm unemployed.

I've got a science review to do that covers everything we've done so far, followed by a test.

Oooo it just stopped raining! I should hunt for meteorites!

<shameless spamming>
I think that there are so many slide shows lately, not because of the contest, but because now everyone knows how to take better pictures.

I noticed that too, it's why I posted my rather pointless slideshow (Now deleted). Yesterday it seemed like it took hours for just one forum to show up. I needed something to do.
Also, I got my wisdom teeth removed, so that's my excuse!

it wasn't that your work was bad..... just that it was nothing more then some pics.... not even an explination as to what it was or what it was about........ but its all good......pain meds will do that

I have a few cool things in the works now but nothing major, one is something just for coolness but is really presenting problems, the other is something that should be pushing the boundaried of it's own workings, it may not work at all but so far I've spent a day or two power drill lathing for both things now I'm on to knife carving and dremel stuff, the one I've just sliced my finger open with is likely to be up today, It's really bad I just noticed my not-quite-ibles that I posted lately.... It's wierd how much yarn stuff hit here, I thought it wouldn't raise as much interest but what do I know?

I was wondering the same thing. The forum topics seem to lack in quality. There are virtually no ibles worth mentioning, and there aren't many things to do. Right now, I just play Pokemon instead, and hope I can get an ible idea.

I've been bored out of my mind today. I must have searched the house ten times over for something to make an instructable out of, just to pass the time.

I'm here! Just not as much.... Homework, projects, family, relationships: there is stuff that matters more than Instructables. I've got things in all of those categories that I have to take care of right now.

What are you talking about! Who doesn't love lionbrand yarn slideshows!!! Personally I think Instructables has slowed down for a few reasons, A. the loss of some of our best members such as lemonie and vegas, and the addition of slideshows and videos, because slideshows are not being used like instructables its just a "hey look at what i did" thing, and the videos are just people posting bar tricks or other peoples work....

Select as Best AnswerUndo Best Answer

I don't think LV and Lemonie's disappearences caused the slow down, since we're talking about a slow down in the last few days... not months. And same goes for the slideshows. (Personally, I don't feel they're effecting the community's talkability much at all)
