Why are fighting dogs soaped ? Answered

Hello,

I've just re-watched The Wire again; In the horrible dog fighting episode (series 3) the dog is covered in soap before the fight begins; I can't find a reason on Google: is it simply to prevent infection or is there another reason?

Thank you.

According to a Humane Society report, it's to wash out possible poisons and toxins that owners may have put in the fur to improve their dog's chances in the fight.

I think that in that particular episode it was to poison the other dog. He was broken up about shooting the dog when it wasnt the dogs fault it lost.

. Are you sure that it is soap and not slobber?
