Each time I receive a letter, there's in X on it. I now it means kisses but why ?
It's symbolic in the cartoon sense. At some point a cartoonist had to think of a way to represent kisses in text, and came up with that. It resembles puckered-lips, but an asterisk would be a bit better... L

There maybe many theories about this but I read up about this a while ago and found an explanation something like this: In medieval times people were allowed to sign with an X if they were illiterate and to show sincerity they usually kissed the X . Over time as more people were able to write, the X began to represent a kiss.
