Winding Method For Guitar Pickups? Answered

I just finished putting together a Savonius wind turbine:

One of the things I really want to work on for the next version is improving the inductance of the coils. Someone told me today that there's a whole community of musicians focussed on wiring their own guitar pickups. He said they do cool stuff with modified sewing machines and the like.

Has anyone run across people or projects like this? Do you have you own favorite methods for quickly and effectively making copper coils? I'm thinking something in the 36 gauge thickness with several hundred wraps. So far, I've managed to do okay with 28 gauge wound up in aluminum bobbins by a variable speed drill, but I know there's got to be a better way.

I'm actually going to be looking into this. Perhaps a pickup winding machine?

Pickups generally use thinner wire than you've got (42 or 43), so breakage is an issue...

The sewing machine idea is exactly what I was thinking ... since both the spool of "wire" and the bobbin usually sit on the top of the sewing machine ... it must only be the tension factor that needs to be adjusted so there is no breakage. Very cool ... hope someone can enlighten us on the idea.
