Yes. Back again, with more of a challenge. How would you construct a Gunshot-Location-System for 2006s standards? Answered

How'd you do it?

The new requirements included:

Shooter localization to plus or minus 15 degree accuracy, and within one second of the shot

Reliability for shot miss distances of one to 30 meters

Ability to detect and localize fire from AK-47s and other small arms at ranges from 50 to 150 meters

Reliable performance in urban environments with low buildings

Operable when mounted on a vehicle moving up to 60 miles per hour on either rough terrain or highways

Ability to withstand sand, pebbles, rain, and light foliage impacts

Ability to deliver alert information in both a voice announcement and on an LED display

Microphone array and electronics box must be replaceable in the field[4]

Plot device. Don't attempt to justify it, just assert it. Because, frankly, it can't be built.

Yet it has been in use since 06. This is old tech, yet still interesting. What makes you think it cant be done?

What makes you think it _has_ been done? (And if you can find a citation, you can probably use information from that to find more details.)

Trianguation with a set of microphones, comparing impulse arrival time, works in the ideal situation and is conceptually easy.

But making it work despite road noise, and offroad noise, at 60MPH seems unlikely to me. Ditto in urban setting where you will get reflections and the sound from which the noise is coming may have little or nothing to do with where it originated from.Ditto "shot miss distances", whatever that is.

This really does sound more like movie/novel pseudotech, or at most proof-of-concept, than anything practical in realworld environments. I may be wrong, of course, but I just don't buy it.

c/sound/direction/, of course. (Engage mind before putting fingers in gear.)

I understand you lack in confidence. The design DARPA set the US army up with is a 8 microphone rig. Of course, the algorithmic they're using are not public information, but easily applied. And more impressively, they've been trialling with counter rocket defense systems at high speeds.

This is more of a forum question then a help question. I know how its done, but how would you do it? There are so many designs in use.
