A relay coil is designed to move the clapper ( armature ) only.

If you remove the coil assembly there is an electro-magnet air tube that might pull a B•B to the center of the winding.

With a 555 timer you may cause the B•B to pop out the top of the coil.

You may call it a coilgun,  I will call it an insect fart .

On many relays it is a simple screwdriver job to separate the coil winding
from the relay assembly by sliding it away from the round rod magnetic
metal frame leaving a coil with an empty air tube for your fun.

Yes you can use a relay or any coil for that matter but it may not be powerful enough to move your projectile like you would want.

So i will need about 3 or 4 relays?

Check out the coil gun instructables to the right of this page and see what is needed. At the very least you can use the magnetic wire from the relay to make the coil(s) you need.

How do you propose to use a single coil to make a coil gun ?
