Yes, if you can turn it on hard and fast, same as any transistor.

Course "it works", just size the transistor appropriately for the PEAK current in the inductor and the supply voltage.

And some padding on the selected voltage rating for inductive kick. I had to boost my voltage rating to keep from smoking FETs on turnoff when I used them in a vaguely similar situation.
