The important question becomes: why doesn't the wifi program in xmbc work - wrong wifi adapter? Insufficient current on the usb power input?

Either way: the product you are looking for is called a wifi ethernet bridge. It 'inputs' wifi for connection and outputs 10/100/1000 wired ethernet.
Something like: http://www.dlink.com/us/en/home-solutions/connect/routers/dir-505l-shareport-mobile-companion
^^I personally have one of those. It plugs directly into power and has a high power 1.2 amp usb port built in - killing 3 birds with one stone so to speak.

specifically raspberry pi

The Pi already has an Ethernet connection on it. If you need wifi then get a basic USB wifi adapter and your all set. If you can find linux drivers for it.

ok I want to get something to replace the ethernet cord and make it wireless the adapter I have wont work for xbian

Have you check the xbian forums for options. You may be able to find a set of drivers that will work with your wi-fi adapter.
