good electronic books for beginner Answered

Hi there, Ive done a search on here but couldnt find a relevant post that recommends electronics for beginner type books. Does anyone have any reccs? Im not a noob to maths or programming and i did physics a-level that covered the basics of electricals but never actually done anything practical. Ive amazoned and found two books that seem to have great reviews and they are: Practical Electronics for Inventors by Paul Scherz and Title is Starting Electronics by Keith Brindley They seem good but from what i can tell they are only reference type books and dont have projects to help practice the knowledge. any tips would be greatly appreciated.


OK I looked for mims but its in short supply in england...trying to get hold of a used version. Whilst I'm looking i thought of a potential project id might like to try one day once I'm up to the task...what are your thoughts on this in terms of difficulty. All i want to do is build a vibrating alarm which goes repeatedly at an interval i set.. e.g i set it to 20 min intervals and then press start, it will vibrate every 20minutes. How difficult a project is that for a beginner? Can you buy vibrating units or could i just strip the rumble pack out of a ps2 controller?? Why do i want this alarm - i want something that will remind me to stick to new habits i set myself i.e. stop slouching or review japanese vocabulary etc etc. All the watches ive seen either dont vibrate or require manually resetting the alarm each time (annoying if the interval is 5 mins). There is a commercial solutions to this but its 60 dollars.

search the net, you don't need any fancy books. What I think you want is a 555 chip running in astable mode, with the output hooked up to a transistor to amplify the signal so you can drive the motor. Make sure you clamp the motor with a diode.

thanks for those suggestions. a couple of points practical electronics for inventor - from reviews it seems it is more a reference book rather than something that teaches you how things work via projects.. is that true? also ive heard there are lots of typos in the calculations and that its quite confusing. The overal rating is high at 4 stars but there were a lot of 1 star reviews with comments about the typos and it being more reference than what one might expect from the title etc. What are you thoughts on that? also the forrest mims book: are there some projects in there? or is it more reference? ill check those online links out as well. thanks for all your help so far.

yeah, the practical electronics book is more of a reference book, but I like those better because how are you suppose to make your own circuits if you don't understand how everything works?

. Mr. Mims has published quite a few books and small "notebooks" for beginners. I highly recommend anything by him.

I read part of practical electronics for inventors and B&N; and it is an EXCELLENT BOOK. I was actually going to post to tell people to buy it since it was so good. The book converts everything into easy to understand water analogies, even transistors! After that book teach youself electricity and Electronics by Glbilsco is a good, bit more advance book. Get the Practical Electronics for Inventors books, I'm ordering it right now because it's 14 buck cheaper than at B
