has anyone made a gps guided helicopter? Answered

Like to find out if anyone has made a guided helicopter using a gps from an iPhone 4s or any other way of guiding a quad / or helicopter so you can give it a point on a map and it will fly to that location or to operate thru web or google maps etc..

Do you have access to an Android phone? If you do you can use Amarino to access and send coordinates from the phones GPS. Even easier you could probably make a fairly simple app with the MIT App Inventor that used the Android as the copter's brains, using the on-board GPS, calculating a heading, and sending appropriate commands to a Arduino controlled copter.

The beauty of the MIT App Inventor is that you don't have to know Java (the language Android apps are usually coded in). If you read the help sections of the individual functions and understand the basics of loops (if, if-then, etc) you should be able to build a suitable app.

Unless you bought a very strong bluetooth module (even then the one in the phone would be limiting) the range of the copter would be small unless the Android was actually on board. I suspect, as long as it was in cell range, you could have the phone on-board and send commands to the phone via the web which would send commands to the Arduino.

Anyway you go about this it is going to be tough but if a project doesn't challenge you what's the point in doing it? :)
