Well this is a pretty common fear.   Lots of people can't stand public speaking/performances.  Similarly, lots of people can't stand to be recorded, photographed or filmed  for fear that someone may see it.

There's lots of tips and tricks out there.  Some of which are very unhealthy, such as drinking or medicating yourself.  Some are as simple and effective as they are silly.  I always first suggest trying to picture your audience in their underwear, but I'll be honest and say that it usually just works on kids.

If that little trick doesn't work, try some simple desensitization therapy.  Start with performing in front of a mirror.  If that doesn't bother you, practice it a couple of times and move on to performing in front of a large photograph or video of a group of people.  Again, practice a couple of times and move forward.  The idea is to increase your contact with the thing you're afraid of slowly.  Next move on to a crowd of stuffed animals/puppets/toys, or if you're feeling more confident perform in front of one friend or family member.  Add a person each time from here out and work yourself up until you've gathered all your available friends and family members.  Realistically, you should be able to gather an audience of ten or so and if you can handle ten comfortably... you should be able to translate that to a classroom size easily.  In other words, you should be able to handle larger and larger jumps as you progress.  If you can handle a classroom, you should be able to move on to a theater and if you can handle that you should be able to move on to a stadium.  Get it?

If you get yourself to a level where you feel you can speak to small groups and you can't seem to push yourself further, consider joining Toastmasters or a similar group.  They're dedicated to helping people become better public speakers and they can offer you a great deal of training and confidence building exercises.

Of course if you have serious, crippling fears that affect your life detrimentally... seek professional help.  A good therapist should be able to help you further than I can help you here, and again there's no shame in it.   Most people avoid public speaking for the same reasons as you.

I think you need to be confident with the material - this includes the content of the presentation as well as trying to anticipate (within reason) the questions you will be fielded with.

Everyone (even seasoned speakers) get some form of the jitters. Only they tend manage it better due to experience. I find when speaking or performing on stage , once you've warmed up (after the first 5 minutes), you'll stop thinking of it. So it's a matter of getting over the first hurdle. Good luck!

Sure, people will tell you to imagine like you're only talking to one person or something, but honestly, who are you fooling?

Just tell yourself your the boss, you only live life once, live it to the fullest, and give a damn good speech.  You have the authority and what you say goes, so just go up there and go up with confidence!  JUST DO IT!  You can achieve anything, only fear is a little barrier set up your mind, all you have to do is dive headfirst into it and not think about the consequences.

Imagine you're talking to one person. Part of the difficulty you have is trying to spread yourself over a crowd - see the people as an individual entity and you may find things easier.
