USB and MIDI are different data protocols. A simple cable can not convert one to the other; you need a bit of computing power in the middle.
It may not have to be complicated. MIDI is essentially serial data, so you might be able to get away with a USB-to-Serial-port adapter and a bit of programming.
But the simplest thing would be to just buy an adapter cable. Amazon has them for as low as $20.
Well, you could buy one for 8 bucks. That's likely cheaper than the parts would cost you individually:

. You can find schematics/directions for building your own MIDI-to-USB adapter cable, but it doesn't sound like that's your best option.
