to turn on/off say a tubelight, a fan, a plug socket, what are the hardware requirements , with circuit diagrams, which can be easily replace a wall mounted switch board in a household environment

If you're looking for something pre-fabricated, I would suggest the X10 series of products. They're designed to be a direct drop-in to existing electrical lines. A decent storefront for them is on ebay at: http://stores.shop.ebay.com/The-Home-Automation-Store_X10_W0QQ

x10 is great - also your local hardware store should have a few remote control switches.

Put a rubber band on a battery and connect it to a christmas light with a paper clip on the end of it. just attach and disattach it to the wire and christmas light.
