i want 2 build my own weather house, those twee lil things with the lil man that comes out when it rains, any thorts? Answered

i've loved those twee little weather houses since i was a child and am desperate to have one for my own child. however looking at them again i find them not as attractive as my little girl eyes did and have found only 1 slightly retro mushroom version to buy,in which i feel the figures are not particularly well crafted.
being quite creative i thought i'd have a go at making my own but, having no clue how, looked up kits. i found 1, quite sweet, sunny camel comes out rainy - gorilla. great for my son's room but i want to watch the magic myself and not sure that would sit well on my kitchen windowsill.
any idea's on what to use, will guitar string work for the gut string? and do i need the right tension/balance/measurements?
any help or direction would be greatly appreciated.
thanks all.

I belive this is what you are thinking about:-
Your guitar string should be fine provided it is made from natural catgut rather than nylon, if not you could always try your nearest music shop for a source of materials.
In my teens I worked in a store which sold everything from jaw harps to grand pianos, we offered a renovation service for classical instruments such as violins & violas & would invariably have offcuts of catgut around the workshop, I don't know if there is much call for it these days but I would think that true classical musicians would prefer it for the richer tones it produces.
Sounds like an interesting project I may even look into doing one with the grandchildren.
good luck with it I look forward to seeing your instructable.

Good answer, I'm interested but as a humidity-gauge only.

If you have trouble tracking down the workings to build from scratch, you could always buy one premade and then hack it. Replacing the figures and repainting wouldn't be much of a big deal at all. Then you'd have exactly what you want.

It would be helpful if you posted a picture or a link, because I really haven't got a clue as to what you're talking about.
