It is rechargeable and works fantastic. You can also use just a 9v battery but it won't last very long and won't be nearly as bright.

By LED strip I presume it is 12v. You could use a lead-acid battery or even a drill battery if it is 12v. If your battery voltage is higher than 12v use a DC voltage step down converter these are pretty cheap off ebay or something.
can i use 8 AA batteries? will it work?
How long is this piece of string ? Generally they consume around 1A per metre @ 12V.
So, 1 metre, one set of AAs, about an hour, maybe 2
