The best advice you will get is DON'T buy it.
Save for a new one or at least a used one from a reputable store that gives a decent warranty, my sons had similar problems with the red ring of death on a couple of Xbox 360's & the shop where we bought them as used items exchanged them without question TWICE.
Alternatively you could always wait until someone brings out a console that actually works for more than a few weeks before dying on you but in these days of companies like Apple, Microsoft & Sony failing to fix known problems & making excuses to get out of their warranty promises I doubt that will happen any time soon.

Can you afford to waste ANY amount of cash on a machine that will almost certainly end up being an expensive paperweight?
I have four sons & they all saved up, sold their old stuff, worked on paper rounds, delivered catalogues/telephone directories & did odd jobs from as young as 11 to earn the money for the things they wanted; sure we helped out but at the end of the day we could not afford to buy it all for them all the time.
You would be better off waiting until you have saved for a good one than buying something that has already displayed problems, even if you do get it working you can bet that the problem will keep coming back until it stops working altogether.

a year on i know but iv succesfully fixed ylod on ps3's, only time i havnt had success is when i cut corners in the process! if you dont know how to fix them all the other comments are true and valid! all the ylods iv fixed have lasted 6+ months before reoccuring but a couple that i have modded by adding pc extraction fans have lasted since the fix until now, which is well over a year! i will say the only ones iv fixed are the fats and only if the ylod is caused by overheating, which is the problem 9 times out of 10!

STOP.

DO NOT BUY.

PERIOD.

The ylod can be repaired with a number of methods but because it can indicate many different problems the solution may be cheap or it may be very expensive and difficult.

Every ps3 I've revived from a ylod lasted about an hour - just long enough to get savegames and deactivate accounts. There is no easy cheap solution. Keep saving up. Sorry I can't give you better news, but I'm trying to save you your 60 dollars.

This is the first rule of economics - if you can't afford something, you can't have something. If you cut corners you'll end up further behind than where you started. Keep saving up, do little jobs here and there and you'll be surprised how fast you can reach a goal. You'll appreciate it more also.

I appreciate that is a difficult situation, but still, don't waste money on bork'd hardware.

Don't buy knackered stuff unless you know what to do with it.
Haggle for less, much less.

I meant "don't pay $60" - haggle down to $20 at least on the basis that it's pretty much useless to you (whether it actually is or not).
