swarm bots... Answered

i was watching the discovery channel a while ago and on a show abbout robots, the spoke of small robots called swarm bots. the seem to sense distance from each other and are able to trail each other single file, or (i'm sure) other formations. i would like to know if anyone could help me replicate this effect, but on a slightly larger scale.

I started to do some research on this at uCarleton, I was developing a sensor that uses IR to approximate the vector of other robots with the same sensor.. work on it has somewhat slowed down unfortunately.. My prof had created some neat java apps that would simulate what the swarm would do when each robot was given a set of rules to follow. (ie. avoid walls, move towards widgets, run away from other bots etc.. ) Trailing in single file is easily done with boe-bots and IR emitters and detectors. I think there is some documentation on it at parallax.com
