what science is, is rather easy to explain if you switch to the german language: science translated to german is 'wissenschaft' (or 'naturwissenschaft' but that doesn't matter). 'wissenschaft' is formed from the words 'wissen', which means knowledge, and the word 'schaffen', which means something like to make, to develop or to create. so science is that kind of work which creat knowledge.
