Take a resistor wire from an old electric heater. cut a 6" length. attach it to an old train transformer and turn up the power until it cuts smoothly without burning.

I use an old wood burner with a modified tip it works great
get some high guage wire, and short a battery with it
too unpredictable for scroll work,good try though
you could just take a hacksaw blade, and attach that to a 40W soldering iron
Yeah, hobby stores (such as model railroads) usually have foam cutters that have a handle and a wire stretched taunt which is then heated to cut the foam. My dad has one and it works great.
