would it be possible to reverse engineer an electric fan to be a small wind turbine?
I know it would not produce much energy, but would still be an interesting little project.

What sort of electrical fan?

It will only work if it's a DC brushed motor.

Do you mean 'brushed' or 'brushless'?

A 12-volt radiator fan (brushed DC) from most modern vehicles will work as a generator when turned by a decent wind. It should be in a duct for best efficiency. It may only develop a low power of 1 - 50 watts.
