Introduction: Toddlers Shoes With Anti-slip Sole

We needed a pair of new toddler slippers, since the old one became to small. Unfortunately all leather or faux leather slippers I could find were with a leather sole and I already knew they will be slippery on our floor.

So I thought about possibilities of anti-slip and came out in the kitchen, respectively in the bakery goods drawer...

The answer to slippery soles is silicone baking sheet :-)

And I am happy to announce: Yes, it is working.

But try it out yourself.

In this instructables you can find a shoe pattern for toddler feet size EU 22/23 or US 5C/6C.

But you can also buy a pattern in the world wide web and adjust it with the silicon inlets.

Step 1: Material and Tools

You need:

Material

  • silikone baking sheet (in my case red)
  • leather for the sole - it should have the same thickness as the baking sheet (in my case dark brown)
  • soft leather for top and sole linning (in my case grey)
  • leather for the application (in my case blue)
  • thread in fitting colors
  • fabric for lining
  • small piece interlining to strenghten the fabric
  • rubberband

Tools:

  • sewing machine
  • leather needles
  • cutter
  • scissors
  • clips
  • safety pin

Print the pattern and cut out the pieces. Make sure you also transfer the small black marks, you need them later for matching the pieces.

Step 2: Preparation of the Anti-slip Sole

You need the sole pattern piece.

  1. Cut the leather 2x with a flip over for left and right foot
  2. Cut out the anti-slip parts
  3. Cut 2x the leather lining piece with a flip over for left and right foot.

Tack the outer sole and the lining sole together and sew around the anti-slip parts with a color fitting thread.

Step 3: Cutting and Assembling the Anti-slip Parts

You need the silicone pattern pieces.

  1. Cut out 2x with a flip over. (For me it was easier to use a cutter than scissors.)
  2. Dry fit into the cut outs in the sole
  3. sew into the sole with a straight stitch and tack togheter to the leather sole with a zigzag stitch.
  4. Trim all threads

Step 4: The Leather Top

You need the top piece an the application piece.

  1. Cut 2x with a flip over.
  2. The whales should face each other, so make sure you flip the second one :-)
  3. Sew with a straight stitch and add a knot by hand to make the eye.

Step 5: Lining the Top

You need the lining top pattern piece.

  1. Cut 2x with flip over.
  2. Add a piece of interlining to strengthen the lining.
  3. Cut the 2 straigh lines with a knive (or with scissors)
  4. Tack the outer top and the lining right to right (the nice sides facing each other) and sew the upper seam
  5. Flip over and add another seam.
  6. Zigzag around the the top to keep them into position.

Step 6: Preparing the Backpiece

You need the backpiece pattern and the strap.

  1. Cut two times.
  2. Sew the strap on top of the backpiece pattern.

Step 7: Assembling The

  1. Fold the top piece "inside out" around the fore part of the sole.
  2. The edges of the top piece should match the black marks on the sole.
  3. Fix them temporary with clips.
  4. Fold the back piece "inside out" around the back part of the sole. Fix with clips.
  5. Sew with a straight stitch and approx. 5mm (1/4'') of seam allowance.

Almost finished :-)

Step 8: Adding the Rubberband

Use the safety pin to insert the rubber band into the tunnel.

and secure with a knot.

If you already know the size of the toddlers feet you could also sew the rubberband together.

Step 9: Finished Product

Enjoy the finished shoes.

Or let your toddler enjoy the anti-slip shoes.
