Intro: 10 Life Hacks Using Rubber Bands

You know how life can be hard? And little things sometimes just make it a lot harder? Well, I try to do everything I can to make life a lot easier. And with this instructable, it'll make your life easier, too. And cheaper you won't have to buy as many things.

STEP 1: Jar Opener

Just wrap a relatively thick rubber band around a jar lid for grip to make it easier to open.

STEP 2: Car Phone Holder

In your car wrap a rubber band through your air vent to hold your phone in place. This is especially useful if you are using a GPS app. This works with any kind of phone.

STEP 3: Finding Small Things

I don't know about you but I am always losing small things on the floor and they eventually get vacuumed up. Well, no more. Put pantyhose over the end of the vacuum hose and secure with a rubber band. Make sure to secure it tightly. Then turn on your vacuum cleaner and just move it along the floor and it will pick up things like your earring backs, or if one of your kids lost a tooth, and I mean, lost it.

STEP 4: Turning Pages Made Easy

Isn't it sometimes hard to turn the pages on new books? Well, with rubber bands, no more. Just wrap a rubber band around your pointer finger, and it will give you a rubbery grip. Just make sure not to put it on too tightly, or it could cut off your blood circulation.

STEP 5: Doorknob Stay Unlocked (I Command It)

I don't know about you but my baby sister is always shutting the door when she's in a room and then she can't reach the doorknob; so she's locked in. But if you wrap a rubber band around both door knobs, connecting them, the door won't lock. But make sure it's tight enough.

STEP 6: Sewing Made Easier

I don't know if you sew, but I do; and the 5/8's line is so small, it's hard to see on the sewing machine. So I put a rubber band where the 5/8 line is, and I can see it much easier now. This is a must for sewers.

STEP 7: Tea Bag Trick

I don't know about you, but the tea bag string is always slipping into my tea cup. So, just put a rubber band around it and the cup. It works so well.

STEP 8: No More Brown Apples

The inside of my apples are always turning brown before I eat them, especially if they are packed sliced in my lunch bag. Nevermore with this handy trick. Just slice the apple and keep the core together; and if it falls apart, put it back together, almost like a puzzle. Then wrap a rubber band around it; and voila, your apple will not turn brown.

STEP 9: Perfect Manicure

Isn't it so hard to make a perfect manicure? Not anymore. Just wrap a rubber band around your finger where you want the nail polish to end and then paint, and it will look perfect. Thumbs up on that one.

STEP 10: No More Mineral Deposits

Does your fridge ever get minerals deposits on the water dispenser? Nevermore with this handy trick. Fill a sandwich bag almost halfway with vinegar and put it over the dispenser and secure it with a rubber band. Let it sit for 15 minutes. Take the bag off. Then dry with a cloth. And voila, no more mineral deposits.

STEP 11:

That's it. I hope these ideas make your life easier. Don't forget to vote.

In an office with cubicle walls, rubber bands are often airborne. The trick is to lob one onto someone's keyboard, when they don't know who shot it. ;-)

Thanks Everyone for the comments. Sorry can't respond to them all but appreciate them :)

Very clever & useful!...Thanks!!

Your Life Hacks were very useful, Thank you so much for sharing exspecially the "Perfect Manicure" you don't know how many things I've tried to do this and yours worked the best !

LOVE the vacuum cleaner trick and the lid gripper, Broccoli bands to the rescue!!

as far as the fingernail stuff, that is why 3M makes masking tape, or any tape ya go. Nice collection in general. Carry on, but do remember the band die over time they turn to goo then dry onto stuff with no chance of release w/o residue

Silicone cooking bands to the rescue. ORDINARY rubber bands age and deteriorate. But since I found silicone cooking bands, usually used to bind a turkey's legs together, or a buncha broccoli, I go thru more than 25 in 6 months. They are about $12-15.00 for 25, but they last for years. And keep on stretching. And since they withstand temps up to 550 F., they even last when we store things in our garage attic in Central Florida! (It gets close to oven temps, but not quite).

Never seen those before. I had a bunch of silicone bake ware and gave up on it. I never trss my turkey I sew it up or leave it as is. Chickens the same. I will keep my eye out for them though.

thanks

I found them originally at a Kitchen store in a mall, but haven't locally. So I have family order them via Amazon twice a year for my BD in July and Christmas. There are 2 companies that make them.

ALSO forgot to mention that one can undo and rewrap things over and over, but the do come apart after a year or so. No residue on things. And other sites will be suggested that have larger and/or thicker bands. I luv em.

Ditto that one and also the car vent holder
sheesh yeah I missed that, I do it myself sometimes before I saw this. I cut up fat broccoli bands and rubber cemented them to stuff that needed feet, temporarily as they eventually turn to goo!
The tea-bag could be secure from slipping in by roping around the 's handle. Turn the page better by moisten you're fingertip
true but I hate getting my fingers & pages wet & then the pages end up getting dingy, more likely to tear too. I would much rather use the rubber band. Could also use it as a temporary bookmark too!
