Introduction: 2x4 Chair
In this instructable I am going to show you how to build a simple and comfortable chair out of three objects. It’s cheap easy to do and requires minimal tools so anybody can do it.
Step 1: Step 1: Materials and Tools
The materials you will need for this project include
- 2x4 (you will need at 3)
- Para cord (have a decent amount)
- Screws (have to be over 2 inches)
The materials you will need for this project include
- Screw driver
- Miter saw or any kind of saw
- a big drill bit
Step 2: Step 2: Dimensions
For the chair there is no set dimensions so you get to make them up as you go along. First you are going to need to measure how tall the bottom of the desk that you are going to use the chair at. The back legs are going to be 14 inches taller than the front legs. Next is how wide you want it to be I would recommend 18 inches for the average size person. Finally you need to know how deep you want it which I would recommend making it 14 inches.
Quantities and Recap
- 2 front legs= bottom of desk height - 8 inches
- 2 back leges= Front legs + 14 inches
- 3 width= 18 inches for the average person
- 4 depth= 14 inches
You can now cut these pieces
You will also need a bunch of blocks for the part you will sit on. I will explain it when we get there.
Step 3: Step 3: Building the Frame
Once you have the main pieces cut out its time to start putting it together. First take the two back legs and lay them next to each other. Next take the front legs and lay them on the outsides of the back legs. Next take the 4 pieces that are used as the depth and lay them out as the picture shows. Make the best right angles you can and screw each of the sides together. The two sides should be opposite to each other.
Finally take the three that are used for the width and use them to attach the two sides together. One board should go at the front on the very bottom. The second board should be place at the front of the legs at the very top (look at the second and third image for help). Finally the third board goes on the back, oppisate to the second board.
Step 4: Step 4: the Seat and Back Rest
This is the part that we need the bunch of blocks that I mentioned
earlier. If you followed the dimensions that I recommended so far I would recommend cutting them as squares of 3.5x3.5 inches you will need in total 15 of these squares. 9 for the seat and 6 for the back rest.
For the 9 that will make the seat you need to drill 2 holes that run through the block on both sides (look at the image). These holes will allow the paracord to go through it.
For the 6 that will make the backrest you only need 2 holes drilled through them.
Step 5: Step 4: the Home Stretch
Drill 6 holes on each side of the frame evenly spaced apart
and towards the top (look at the first image). Do this on all four sides. Drill 4 holes on each of the back legs towards the top (refer to the second to last photo.
To make this part easier twist a thin wire around the para cord to drawl it through the blocks easier (refer to the third image). With all the holes drilled you can start to weave the para cord through the sides of the chair and then come back on the other sides of the block (refer to the fourth image). Do this for the three rows. Once that is finished do the same thing this time starting at the front and going back.
Finally do the same thing this time on the backrest.
Step 6: Step 5: Finished
Once you are done sit back and relax in the comfy chair you
just made. If you have any questions just ask them and I will try to answer them as soon as possible.
