Introduction: Make a 360° Book. (DIY)

About: I'm a french student, I like doing 3D design. I love drawing too, and playing Chess.

Hi guys, today i am going to show you how to make a 360 book. So this project came to my mind afer watching this video. I found it very satisfying so i tried to do the same. I did some research and these books are called 360° books by Yusuke Oono if you want more. Also, this project took to me so many time (all of the winter holidays because in France we're on break now)( from design to completion) so if you want to do the same, take your time. Now let's start.

Supplies

All of the things that i used in this project were already in my possession so you already have almost of them.

So you need (for one book):

  • 4 a4 sheets (one of the two sides can already be used, we need only one side blank)
  • thin cardboards (you can use biscuit wrappers or something like this)
  • Needles and thread
  • Scissors
  • Precision knife
  • Glue
  • Ruler
  • Protractor
  • Pencil
  • Something to color (colored pencil, felt pen, paint..., anything works)

Step 1: Design of Main Shape

All of your books start always with the same shape. This will serve as a mold to all of the things we will draw, to avoid tracing ang drawing the same thing over and over again. We will save a lot of time.

  • So on a cardboard, trace a rectangle 7cm wide and 16cm long.
  • On another cardboard, trace a rectangle 7cm wide and 8cm long.
  • Then, using the precision knife, cut your shape.
  • Trace an arc as in the picture and cut also, the point above the arc is not obligatory.

Step 2: Theme

Then you need a theme to your book, personnaly, I use chinese new year theme and easter theme, so you can choose one of them if you want or choose an other them that you like.

  • When you have chosen your theme, think of a principal shape to draw it in your mold. For the new year theme, i choose as principal shape a dragon, because we are in the dragon year right now, you know; and for the easter theme, i choose an egg, because children go on egg hunts and we eat chocolate eggs on easter.

Your principal shape is going to take an important place in your book. For the big rectangle, you can draw only in one side of the rectangle as i did.

Step 3: Cut

So, using the precision knife, cut the part you don't need on your mold, so for the new year and easter theme, it will give something as in the picture.

Step 4: Tracing

  • Now, using the mold, trace it on a4 sheets(in the blank side), or on cardboard; for the big rectangle, trace it on paper, and the little rectangle , trace it on the cardboard.

The cardboard will use to rigidify your book.

  • For one book, you need 11 of the big rectangle, and 10 of the little rectangle.
  • Then cut your shapes and normally, it gives you somenthing as in the picture above.

Step 5: Fold

Then fold all of the paper in 2.

Step 6: Cutting

  • Using the precision knife, cut the shape you didn't need on both cardboard and paper as in the the step 3.

Then unfold your paper so you have two sides symmetrical.

Step 7: Color

Now you have to color the papers. Stay within the themes you have chosen. So for the new year, i paint it red for the dragon, and orange for the frame; and for easter, i paint the egg blue, and the bottom of the frame green like grass. So paint all of the papers.

Step 8: Decoration

Now, you have to draw decorations, they must fit in the book. So you can see the decorations that i did for the easter theme (to the right), and for the new year theme (to the left). So you can do the same, or do something different, or add some decoration. Stay again within your theme.

Book cover.

Now you have to make a book cover,

  • so take a cardboard and draw 2 rectangles of 7cm wide and 8cm long. Then you can draw something on it or not.

Step 9: Gluing

Now you have to glue all of things that you have

  • So first, take one of the paper, and fold it in two, then add glue in one side and add a cardboard, then add glue in the cardboard and add a paper, and repeat again and again. You can see the first steps in the video above if you didn't understand.
  • When you used all of the paper and the cardboard, glue the cover in each side of the book, so you have something like the 4th and the 5th picture.
  • Then, glue your decorations inside of the book, distribute them to get a prettier result.

Step 10: Thread

Now, we are going to add threads to have prettier and perfect opening, this will serve to delimite the space between the pages of the book.

  • So first take your needle, and add a 40cm approximately. Then tie a knot, if you don't know how to do, this video will explain it.
  • Then attach the thread in one of the cover.
  • Then, take your protractor, and add a space above 32 or 33° between the pages of the book, then connect the two pages with the thread and tie a double knot. This video show the first steps of this step.

  • When you did all of the space between the pages, connect with the over cover and tie a knot to finish the thread of the book.

So it gives you something like in the pictures above normally.

Advice: make premade hole on the book to avoid breaking your needle.

Step 11: Finish

Now, your 360° book is finished. It is so satisfying to open it. So i hope you liked this instructable, and it inspired you. You can ask questions, or add advice or correction in the comments (because english is not my native language). Don't hesitate to share your 360° books, and share this instructable.

Bye☺.
