Introduction: 3D Cutting Board

I used 3 different types of wood for this project, maple, mahogany and hickory. I REALLY would have liked to use maple, walnut and cherry, but walnut and cherry was special order at my hardware store...but it still turned out pretty neat.

Step 1: Step 1: Make Your Marks

I purchased each piece 1 and 1/2 inches wide therefore there was no ripping any material down on the table saw. Each cut has to be EXACTLY 30 degrees and measure EXACTLY 1 and 3/4" strong for best results with minimum gaps.

I did a couple test pieces before I started to ensure that everything would work out.

After I got everything lined up, I set up a backstop on the miter saw to make things go a little quicker.

Step 2: Step 2: Apply Glue

I glued and clamped each individual square until it dried (approx. 15 min) making sure the grain went in all different directions but stayed the same on each piece of wood...i.e. the mahogany grain points down, maple points to the right and hickory points up....

Step 3: Step 3: Fill Gaps

I used the same wood glue and mixed it with sawdust from my orbital sander to fill in the gaps. After it dried I used 80 grit and then 120 grit to sand it off.

Step 4: Step 4: Rip It Down

Using my table saw I ripped it down to a rectangle and then I used my palm router to put an edge on it. I sanded the ends with 100 grit sandpaper and that was sanded by hand

Step 5: Step 5: Oil It Up

After it was sanded, I oiled it up with butcher block oil, which is food safe, and that's it...

I'm pleased with how it turned out, just wish I would have waited and ordered the walnut and cherry....I think it would have looked a lot better...
