Introduction: 3D Pen - Custom Phone Case

About: I design and build 3D Pen and 3D Printing creations!

2-3 hour project

You will need:

  • 3D Pen
  • Correct color filament
  • Epoxy or other glue
  • Paper and pencil

Helpful tools:

  • Some way of heating parts of the model (lighter, cooking torch, etc.)
  • Flush cutters
  • Wax paper Tape

Please note that I made a time-lapse video of the full process, so you can see all the little details on how to make this in the following video:

A high level overview of how to make this is:

  • Two options for creating a combination of the desired image and an outline of your phone body
  • Use 3D pen to trace image, changing colors as needed
  • Pen in the whole outline of the phone, to make the main body of the phone case
  • Glue the penned image onto the main body of the cover
  • Add 4 small tabs at the corners, that can hook onto your phone and retain the cover

** Finally take care and the proper precautions when using an dangerous equipment that this Instructable requires. **

Step 1: Create Combination of Image and Phone Outline

Here are 2 possible ways to get a combination of the desired image and an outline of your phone body:

Option 1 (this is the method I used)-

  • Measure the relevant dimensions of your phone
  • Sketch this outline in CAD or photo manipulation software (Inkscape, Photoshop, etc.)
  • Take the desired picture or image of your choice and import it into the software program
  • Scale and position the image till it fits in the phone outline to your liking
  • Print 2X copies of this combination at 1:1 scale

Option 2-

  • Take the desired picture or image of your choice and import it into any software where you can scale it (OpenOffice, Word, Powerpoint, etc.)
  • Take a guess at the size you need it to be to fit within the outline of your phone
  • Print this and place your phone over the image
  • Trace your phone outline using a pencil
  • If the image size is off, go back to the software and adjust the scale and try the above steps again
  • Continue iterating this way until the image size and position on the phone outline is to your liking
  • Print 2X copies of this combination at 1:1 scale

Step 2: Trace the Image With a 3D Pen

  • Trace the image with your 3D Pen, changing filament colors as necessary
  • It is recommended to pen on wax paper to prevent the image from sticking too much to the paper.
  • Once complete, peel the image from the paper and set aside

Step 3: Trace the Main Body of the Case With a 3D Pen

  • On the second copy of the combination, fill in the full outline of the phone. This will make the main body of your phone case
  • It is recommended to pen on wax paper to prevent this from sticking too much to the paper.
  • Once complete, peel the main body of the case from the paper

Step 4: Glue Penned Image to Case Body and Make Retaining Tabs

  • Glue the penned image to the case body using epoxy or other glue. If you only use glue on three sides of the image, it will form a small storage pocket under the penned image
  • Add 4x small tabs at the corner of the case body. These will hold the case over your phone.
  • Having some way of heating (lighter, cooking torch, etc.) the tabs can help you form them to the phone shape.

Congratulations, you now have made a custom phone case with a 3D Pen!
