Introduction: 3D Printed Dowelling Jig
I have been struggling with standard dowelling jigs for years so decided to design a 3D Printed Dowelling Jig which is easy to use and accurate. Here is my project.
Step 1: Step 1 - Sizing Up the Timber
Pick the size timber you want to dowel together. I picked 42mm x 19mm (1 3/4 x 3/4 inch)
Step 2: Step 2 - Model Up Dowelling Jig
You can use what ever 3D Modelling package you are comfortable with, I used Pro desktop because that's what I had available.
Step 3: Step 3 - Turn Sleeves on Lathe
To make the sleeve which sits in the 3D model, simply cut a piece of 16mm stock rod 30mm in length. Once you have your piece face off both sides and drill a 9.5mm hole through.
Step 4: Step 4 - Drilling Holes
Place the Dowelling Jig on the end of you work (or wherever you want to make the joint) and clamp into a vice. Once in the vice drill down to your desired length.
Step 5: Step 5 - Joining
Place the dowels into the holes and push together (to test the fit). If your happy with the joint add glue and you finished.
Step 6: Step 6 - Alterations
You can alter the design to fit any size timber or any size dowel. I have made a simple clip on and also an end cap dowelling jig.

Great use for 3D printing! I love seeing practical projects made on these magical machines. I'm tired of seeing orange plastic skulls.

This is awesome! The only thing I would do different is make it a bigger standard size and print inserts or use shims to quickly size it down rather than have one for every size of wood you come across.

Thanks!! I was thinking of developing a insert systems as I found modelling every size time consuming.
