Introduction: 3D Printed SNES Tape Dispenser

In this instructable I will show you how I design this 3D Printed SNES Tape Dispenser. This instructable is easier if you have a vinyl cutting machine.

What you need if you doesn’t have a vinyl cutting machine (it’s my case):

  • A computer quite good (a dedicated GPU is very recommended to 3D modeling)
  • 3D printer
  • A printer
  • Utility knife
  • Scissor
  • Masking tape or painter’s tape
  • Transparent tape
  • Double sided tape (optional)
  • Paint (if you didn’t use colored filament
  • A sharp metal part (I personally used an dedicated part for an old broken tape dispenser)

Step 1: 3D Modeling (optionnal)

This step is optional but in this one i will quickly explain the basics of 3D modelling if you don't want read this one just download the STL files and print them.

I used Fusion 360 to design this model (you can get a free version check this video: youtube.com)

First when you make model from existing part you need to measure all the detail on, but I didn’t have a SNES controller. In case like this in particular for popular model like this one you can find dimensions sketch on google. In our case we need the internal and outside diameter of the tape roll, width of the tape roll and the dimension of the SNES controller After you found references, let’s design.

When you design thing for 3D printing you need to think how you will print them, how you will assemble them, if you want paint parts you need to adapt your design. I recommend for parts you want fix one on each other an offset of 0.2 mm and an offset of 0.4 mm for part you want be able to disassemble easily.

After 2 hours of design I got a decent model.

Step 2: Paint Your Print

After printing test the assembling of the part before painting them, if they don't fit perfectly used sand paper to make them fit perfectly.

If you didn’t use colored filament you will need to paint them. I personally used spayed paint for the bigger part , D pad and start/select button. For the button i used acrylic paint.

For the small part you can use double sided tape to stick small part and paint them easily

For the dark grey layer if you have a vinyl cutting machine you can use it. For other, cover your part with masking tape.Print the template cut it and stick it with transparent tape on the piece masked, cut through the template to cut the masking tape, Then uncovered the area you want paint, paint it and remove the masking tape when it's dry.

Step 3: Assemble Parts and Enjoy

Take all the part assemble them and enjoy your creation.
