I wanted to make something that tied the makers of today with some of the traditional makers, the toy makers and the wood hackers. The toy rocking horse ornament represents the modern makers and the traditional makers who have brought joy to children and led innovation in this great "Nation of Makers."

The ornament prints in pieces that are then glued together so it can be printed without supports and it can be printed on 3D printers ranging from small to large. It can be further customized with a mane and tail and can be a fun project to do with the kids.

I also added a base that has a secret message that only shows up when the light inside it is on. This can be a lot of fun with blinking lights. The picture doesn't show it very well but with the light in it the base says "Merry Christmas" but it is blank when the light is off.

Step 1: Step One: Print the Files

Print 2 copies of the legs file and 1 each of the body and base. The base should be printed face down. You may have to adjust the orientation to print the parts depending on your slicing and printing software.

Step 2: Step Two: Glue the Legs

Glue the legs to the body try to center the back legs in the center of the back circle.

Step 3: Step Three: Glue the Mane and Tail

Take some crochet cording or other thick string and tie one end in a knot. Glue the knot to the horse's tailbone and twist it a little to cause the cord to fray. Do the same with several pieces along the head for the mane. A little bit of glue on the side makes the mane lay down nicely.

Step 4: Step Four: Glue the Base

Glue the horse to the base and stick a light in the small hole in the bottom. When the light is on the base will glow and read "Merry Christmas." You can glue a small clothespin or alligator clip to the bottom of the base to allow you to clip the ornament to the tree. It can also help hold the light in place.
