3D Renault Wheel Center Caps From Epoxy Resin

Do you ever tried to find something you need, at a reasonable cost, but couldn't find it and end up saying "Naah, never mind! I'll make it myself"?

This project is one of that times for me, so I made my car's wheel center caps, because I lost 1 of 4 original caps I had and I want to look all the same.

Epoxy Resin
Pearl Powder Epoxy Resin Colorant
100% Silicone Sealant
Water
Dish Soap
Original Center Cap from the Car's Wheel
Cheep Wheel Center Cap
Rubbing Alcohol (Optional)

Tools:

Caulking Gun
Large Plastic Container
Syringe (without needle)
2 Mixing Containers
Stir stick
Butane Torche or Lighter
Sandpaper
Paper/Piece of Cloth (Optional)

Step 1: Making a Mold

To make the Epoxy Resign Renault Sign will be needing a mold, so I used the Original Cap as the reversed mold.

Fill the Plastic Container with Water.
Stir the water with your hand and pour in Dish Soap until you feel your hand slippery.
Pour enough amount of silicone for your mold, using the Caulking Gun.
Wet the Original Cap (reversed mold) with soapy water.
Under water, gently gather the silicone in your hand and start creating a ball.
Put the silicone ball on the wet Cap and push it so it fills all the spaces around the Caps sign
Leave the silicone to cure and then take the mold off the Cap

Your mold is ready!

If you want, you can make more than one molds and cast the epoxy resin signs all together.

Step 2: Casting the Epoxy Resin Sign

Use the syringe and water to measure the quantity of resin you'll gonna need for the Signs.
Dry the syringe before using it to measure the 2 parts of the resin
Mix the 2 parts of epoxy resin in one of the 2 Mixing Containers, using the stir stick.
Pour in very small amounts of the Epoxy Resin Colorant until you reach the desired look.
Pour the colored Epoxy Resin on your mold and wait for the Resin to cure
After 24 hours you are safe to take the resin off the mold

Step 3: Remove Unnecessary Resin

If your mold isn't perfect, your signs will not be perfect too. But don't worry, I have a solution!

Take a piece of sandpaper (P120-P140) and gently flatten the rough edges.

You can polish the scratches with resign, but this is optional at this step.

Step 4: Making the 3D Renault Wheel Center Caps

Do you remember when I said that I couldn't find what I wanted? In my case, I couldn't find these Caps with a Renault sign, so I bought 4 with the Volkswagen sign glued on them.

At this step, I used the Optional Rubbing Alcohol and Piece of Cloth, to remove the glue.

Use sandpaper to make the surface of the Caps rough, so the Epoxy Resin sticks better on them.
Do the same with the back of the Renault signs.
Use a dry syringe to measure the 2 parts of the epoxy resin.
Mix the 2 parts of epoxy resin in the second of the 2 Mixing Containers, using the stir stick.
Pour a small amount of the clear resin on the cap and spread it using the stick.
Put some resin on the back of the sign and place it on the center of the cap.
Pour the clear resin around and in the middle of the sign.
If the resin has bubbles, you can pop them with the flame of Butane Torche or a lighter. (Just be careful not to burn the resin)
If you have scratches on the signs from the previous step, take a paint brush, of use a toothpick to gently cover the scratches and give the sign a polished look.
Let the resin to cure completely and you are ready to go!
