In this instructable I´ll show you how to make your own wood/resin d6 (6 sided die). This is a project I had been wanting to do for long time but never had the time to do till now. Unfortunately for me this didn't go quite as planned so I dealt with my short comings the best I could. Originally I was going to just make a mountain in a cloudy blue sky but due to my wood model wanting to float to the surface while in the resin I had to change it. In the end i still enjoyed making the die and I hope you do too

Step 1: Materials

The Materials I used for this project were:

epoxy resin
1 1/2¨ x 1 1/2¨ 1 1/2¨ block of wood
acrylic sheet
Hot Glue
Dremel
Bandsaw
Sandpaper (I used 60, 100, 150, 220 grit )
Acrylic Paint
Paint Brush
Utility Knife
Pencil/Sharpie
disposable Latex gloves\
Tape

Step 2: Outlining the Mountain

First, take your block of wood and cut it to the dimensions I specify (1 1/2" x 1 1/2" x 1 1/2"). After cutting your block of wood you are going to mark out the general layout of your mountain.

Step 3: Carving the Mountain

Next you are going to take your dremel and block of wood and slowly start carving out the shape of the Mountain. My recommendation is to remove the top corners of the block until you have a thin plus (+) shape on the top of it. From there you should start to narrow the plus (+) to a point as you start to form your mountain. As you carve your Mountain I recommend going with the flow and sort of let the mountain take shape in you hands as you carve it. Once You have your desired shape take you sandpaper and start smoothing down your mountain (going from 60 to 220 grit)

Step 4: Making the Mold

After you finish carving, go ahead and put your mountain to the side. Grab your Acrylic sheet and start by marking out the pieces needed to make the mold. You will need one 1 1/2" x 1 1/2" piece for the base and four 1 1/2" by 2" pieces for the wall sides. Once you mark out the pieces use your utility knife to score the acrylic sheet until you can cleanly break them off. Next Take your tape and tape all the pieces together and then follow it up a couple layers of hot glue around all the seams. Just to make sure your mold is good pour some water in it and check for leaks if you spot any, seal them up with hot glue.

Step 5: Entombing the Mountain

This next step varies depending on what resin to use. What you are going to do is take your resin and read and follow the specified instructions that come with the epoxy resin, this should include measuring out the resin, mixing the resin, adding the dye, and the pouring of the resin in the mold. I also recommend making sure your model is attached to the bottom of the mold just to prevent the model from rising while in the resin.

Step 6: Wait and You Shall Receive

Next put your mold somewhere safe and leave it to cure for 24 hours

Step 7: Breaking the Prison

After you die is done curing go ahead and remove the acrylic casing for the model. If done right the Casing should be relatively easy to peel of. Using your utility knife carve off any excess resin and use some sandpaper (starting at 60 grit) and sand down all the sides of your model till it's nice and smooth.

Step 8: The Final Shape

Next you are going to your model and mark out a line 1 1/2" tall this will be the height of your die. Now take your model and cut it on the bandsaw. once cut, sand the side you cut one more time until smooth. Once that's done sketch out each number on the sides of the die and then take your dremel and lightly carve out each number.

Step 9: Final Touches

Last but certainly not least, get your acrylic paint and gently paint in the crevices you carved out. After the paint dries you have a fully functioning d6.
