A Cheap DIY Hemisphere for GoPro

Intro: A Cheap DIY Hemisphere for GoPro

Probably, everyone who has a GoPro or another waterproof camera tried to make such picture.

However, when you dip the camera into the water, you see only a huge blurry water edge that overlaps everything above and below. Water appears to be too close to the camera lens, and therefore, it is out of focus. A special “hemisphere” is needed to avoid this this effect. So, let's make it.

STEP 1: We Will Need

  1. A GoPro box (for about 10$ I got a separate one for this task, here is for Hero4)
  2. A box from CDs (we need just a round piece of plastic).
  3. A transparent decoration ball (from 0.5$ on Ali, I used the 13.5 cm one)

STEP 2: Cutting

We cut holes for camera lens and a button in the base of CD box.

In my case the base fits perfectly to the ball.

STEP 3: Gluing

Now it’s necessary to fill all possible holes with glue.

I did it with a glue pistol. By the way, the glue must be somewhat elastic.

No reason to save on glue, so I just covered the whole box and a hemisphere along their perimeter.

STEP 4: Tests

Connecting through Wi-Fi and it’s done! Unfortunately, there's no warm sea by my house, so I had to simulate the tests : )

It is up to you: either to pay more than 80$ or to use your creativity and spend less than 20. Also there is no risk for the camera as it stays in the box.

That's all, thank you for your attention and good luck with your projects!

Wow this is epic. I love the idea. Thanks for sharing.

I'm going on vacation in a couple months and I need to do this! I actually have an extra gopro housing that's all scuffed up, but it's still waterproof. I might do it with that one. If I do it I'll share some pictures. Thanks!

This is awesome! Can't wait to try. I've have always wanted one but wasn't willing to spend the money. Perfect timing for my upcoming Caribbean trip. Thanks for sharing.
