Introduction: A DIY Cyclopia Robot - Candy Monster

This is a DIY electrical Robot kit I made for 8-14 students. They can DIY it for their youngest brother as a gift, put above of the candy bowl or other "treasure box" as a guarding monster. When something approached, it will open the eye. This DIY kit can be assembled in 3-4 hours for any one.

I develop it for primary and middle school students when I was a part-time teacher of “maker class” in The High School Affiliated to Renmin University of China. The director wants me to make a kit which is attracting and technical for students. Inspired by Mike Wazowski ( a green cyclopia from Disney Pixar's movie “Monsters Inc”) and monsters who guard the treasures. Materials are milk cartons which was throw away by students every morning in this school. I wish the kits could inspire the student be creativity and pay attention to the view things.

  • Micro servo SG90 (9g) - TowerPro

Step 3: Part1: Structure

  • The internal structure is shown in the first pic. I use 2 motors to control xy directions, X: eyes left & right Y: eyelid up & down. I use PVC plastic strip as an transmission structure.
  • Screwed the L shape & other plastic supports tighten together like this.
  • Note: The foremost 2 tapping Screws are for locking up the eyelid, above on the left & right yellow strips

Step 4: Part1.1: Electronic Structure

  • Make 2 motors glued together like the first pic. Crossed shape, One is facing up (X-axis) another facing behind (Y-axis)
  • Cut the raised parts of the 2 motors, convenient for later glue with the base.
  • Mount the blades (2 white plastics)

Step 5: Part1.2: Transmission Structure

  • Shape the PVC strip like this ( Length: 45~50mm, Width: 7mm)
  • Drill 2 holes (diameter 1.5) at both ends.

  • Board selection: Tool—Board—Arduino Uno (or Microduino both available)

Step 8: Step 4: Draw

  • Put the electronic part in your milk box and painting as whatever monster you like. Done!!!
  • After some friends help me improve it, my "monster" can be mounted to the wall, 2 month later.

In the end, we arranged a Workshop in 2014
