In this instructable, you will learn how to create a stunning lithophane lamp featuring AI-generated paintings, beautifully illuminated by an RGB LED strip.

Whether you’re looking to enhance your home decor, create a unique gift, or simply explore the possibilities of modern technology, this lithophane lamp project is a fantastic way to get hands-on with 3D printing, electronics, and AI art!

Supplies

There are a few things you will require:

  1. 3D Printer: To print the lithophane lamp.
  2. Translucent Filament: White PLA or PETG filament works well.
  3. RGB LED Strip: One with a remote control or Bluetooth.
  4. Glue Gun: To glue the lithopane lamp together.
  5. Internet Access: To generate the AI images and lithopane

Step 1: Generate Images

To begin creating AI Art, you can use Bing's DALL-E:

Go to the Bing Image Creator powered by DALL-E.

Sign in with your Microsoft account if required.

Input prompts to generate unique artwork. Experiment with different descriptions to get a variety of results.

Once you are satisfied with the generated images, download four images of your choosing in high resolution!

Step 2: Convert Images to Lithopane

Convert to Lithophane:

  • First, head over to LithophaneMaker and upload your four images to the site.
  • Then, change the Depth, Width and Height to 150mm.
  • Afterward, change the Light Bulb Diameter and Socket Outer Diameter to 70mm each.
  • Then, crop the image to your liking and press on Create .stl

Step 3: Printing

Print the Lithophane Panels and Lamp Frame

  1. 3D Print Lithophanes: Use your white filament to print your lithophane box.
  2. 3D Lamp Frame: Then, download the attached files and print both the cover and lamp base.

You may need to use supports for the Lithopane Lamp.stl.

Step 4: Assemble the Lamp

Now that you've finished printing, it's time to assemble the lamp.

  1. Install RGB LED Strip: Begin by wrapping your RGB strip around the centre pole, using the adhesive on the back to secure it in place.
  2. Connect controller: Afterwards, connect your RGB controller and secure it in place using some Hot Glue.
  3. Gluing Base: Then, thread the main pole through the hole at the bottom of the Lithopane Lamp and then use some hot glue to secure the lamp box in place.
  4. Cable Cover: Finally, slide the cable through the cutout in the Lithopane Lamp Clip and then press it firmly into the back of the lithopane to secure it in place!

Step 5: Finished

Finally, plug in your Lithopane Lamp and it should be complete!

By using Bing's DALL-E to generate personalized images and converting them into lithophanes, you have transformed digital art into an illuminated masterpiece.

I hope this Instructables has inspired you and provided a rewarding experience!
