Introduction: Aaahh!! Real Monsters! Ickis & Oblina

About: Writer | Photographer | Musician

My girlfriend and I decided to go for a 90s kid throwback costume this year. Ickis and Oblina from Aaahh!!! Real Monsters! These were 100% home-made costumes, and not as difficult as they look!

Step 1: Sketching and Sculpting

First thing you always have to do is draw the shapes! Figure out how to break down the geometry and how to scale the proportions to a human frame.

This year we used sculpting clay to make 3-D models, which we then cut in half and flattened out to get the patterns we needed.

Step 2: Cutting Foam Pieces

Next stop: Wal-Mart! We bought sheets of bedding foam, measured out our shapes and drew them on. We cut them out using an Exacto knife and glued the pieces together using a hot glue gun. To create the 3-diminsionality from a 2-dimensional sheet, we cut triangular darts into the head pieces and glued them together.

Step 3: Spray Painting!

Lots of spray paint from Wal-Mart to get that cartoon color!

Step 4: Testing/Finishing Touches

Added teeth using cardboard, glued the head pieces together with hot glue, and attached everything using wire hangers for reinforcement. My girlfriend stitched together her unitard herself, and I bought some burgundy tights for my legs and arms. For my shoes I glued a pair of sneakers into the big foam ones I made, stuffed them with bed foam scraps, and sealed the bottom with a cardboard sole. Later I added some skateboard grip tape for traction.

Step 5: Complete!

We went to the Village Halloween Parade in NYC, and I made it onto the local news coverage!
