Introduction: Add a Zipper to a Knit Cowl...
... it will give it an edge and tons of possibilities. You might even choose to use a zipper with a different color!
Step 1: You Will Need
- A sewing machine (although this could be done by hand).
- A zipper
- A knit rectangle*, long enough to go around your neck.
For mine, I used thick Alpaca yarn, and made a small basket weave, which you can find instructions for here: http://www.simple-knitting.com/basketweave-stitch....
Step 2: Pin and Sew the Zipper on One Side
You definitely need to use a zipper foot for this. Try and bunch the yarn towards the beginning a little bit because as the sewing will happen, it will want to stretch out. I've stopped and adjusted the yarn placement several times to make sure I wouldn't end up with extra yarn at the end of the zipper.
Step 3: Pin and Sew the Other Side
Since we are making a loop, you want to open up your zipper to sew this side. The good thing is that we're working with yarn which is flexible, so you can even close the zipper towards the end and continue sewing to make sure everything is even.
And you're done! Now go impress your friends.
