Introduction: An Aquaponics Setup for Your Aquarium
I wanted to build a cheap and easy aquaponics system to place in my existing 10 gallon aquarium. All parts were purchased from the nearest Home Depot except for the pump which came from Amazon. The entire setup cost less than $40 and took about 3 hours to put together. One thing I like about this setup is that it would work with any size tank - just start with bigger flower pots or buckets. Thanks for looking!

Very interesting, thank you very much for sharing.
The idea is fine, but it takes up too much space and is not very aesthetic in the aquarium. But it is an initial idea that can evolve towards something really very interesting, such as the combination of aquariums and terrestrial plants.
Greetings and many thanks for sharing

I have been looking for a smaller scale one to be able to use desktop wise. Thanks for the details and the good start for those of us that are not experienced yet.

I have been concerned about that as well. I have 9 fish in there now. I pre-charged the tank a bit by running it for 10 days with only mechanical (not biological) filtration so there would be a little nitrogen built up before adding the plants.
Next steps will be learn a little more about testing the water and to add one more grow-light bulb.

Will there be enough Nitrogen produced by the fish to ensure good plant growth ? (all depending on how many fish and nitrogen output of the species, of course)

As with all Instructables, this one is a work in progress and a learning experience. This is my second attempt at aquaponics - the last attempt was with a commercially available setup, and I definitely learned a few lessons from that experience. I kept those lessons in mind when designing this setup. If you'd like, you can read about that experience here: http://mesquitehugger.blogspot.com/2013/10/another-cool-aquaponics-system-and-send.html

I wonder how it will look after let's say, one month. Everything looks good in the first few days. Mother nature is a complicated and sensitive matter however and will strike back if anything is wrong.
Let's wait for the result first and then say it is O.K.

An elderly friend of mine was wanting to grow some plants and spices indoors. She was considering a hydroponic setup but they all seemed overwhelming. She has an aquarium I think this might be her solution. An excellent project! I like the pics of you abd your friends. Oh dare I say it... I dare, I dare! May the Swartz be with you!

Thank you both! I really enjoyed building it and have been very happy with the results so far. (And the fish seem to love having the flower pot to explore.)
