Introduction: Apocalypse Preparedness: Deadly Spearhead
In a post- apocalypse world, you may not have guns or normal weapons for various reasons. So the skill of making your own weapons for hunting or self defence will be priceless. In this instructable I will teach you how to make your own spear from things you already have.
Step 1: Selecting Materials
Be creative! use whatever you can find made out of metal. For this project I like the old lawn mower blade the best.
Step 2: Drawing a Design
I had to cut a flat section from the lawnmower blade. For this I used my metal chop saw but you could also use a metal band saw or hack saw. Again use what you have. Next, rough out a design in sharpie on the metal so you have a guide.
Step 3: Cutting
Remember use whatever cutting tool you have. Also, don't try to cut exactly on your drawn lines. You will probably make some mistakes. It's better to have a little extra space so you don't mess up the entire project (like I did my first time)
Step 4: Grinding\Filing
Now is the time you take off that extra space you left. Do the final shaping of the spear head now. Make sure it's exactly what you want before you start putting the edge on.
Step 5: Putting the Edge On
To start grinding your edge, make sure you have the angle you want for the grind (pitch\angle) of the edge. I used my bench grinder and a dremel with sanding wheels. But you can also use files and sand paper. If you have patients you CAN use a sharpening stone. But use what you have.
Step 6: Final Sharpening and Finishing
When you finish your grind, you can start the real sharpening. For this I used my sharpening stone. I Started with the coarse and then went to medium then fine. Then I took some 500 grit sand paper and did some final touch ups.
Step 7: All Done
At this point find a straight stick, broom handle or something of the sort and attach your HANDMADE spearhead and go get some food or defend your family! The skills you learn in this project can carry over to all sorts of other weapons.(arrowheads, knives, axes Etc.) Always remember, use whatever you have. Just because you don't have a gun or a knife you bought at the sports store doesn't mean your personal world has to end! Improvise and thrive in the post-apocalyptic world you prep for.

I am pretty good at throwing spears. I love going into the woods to practice. I have very little money, so I have decided to make my own spearheads. Thank you for the great ides. Congratulations on the amazing project.

you can use the same process to make a good knife. always remember to use good tool steel so your spear/knife doesn't break at a crucial moment. great 'ible.

Pretty nifty! Voted!!
By, the way, a couple of holes or slots on the tang could be helpful in fixing a makeshift handle or even secure it to a pole for use as a spear
