Introduction: Apple Crisp Recipe
A delicious dessert (especially with ice cream), this apple crisp is loaded with apples and topped with an irresistible mixture of sugar, butter, and oats.
The types of apples you use are up to you, and each produces a slightly different variance in flavor. The actual insides are thickened with flour, and seasoned with a bit of sugar and cinnamon, among other things.
You may be able to substitute flour with corn starch, and cane sugar with coconut sugar or other alternatives, but be sure not to skip out on the cut-in butter in crumb topping! It's what gives the apple crisp character. If you don't care about the topping, stick with pie, in other words. (Unless you are making a dutch apple pie, which literally combines the best in both worlds, and basically is comprised of a regular apple pie with crumb topping o_o maybe that will be my next dessert creation? Let me know what you think :P )
That said, if I was on a time crunch, and had to decide between pie and crisp, I'd definitely go with the apple crisp, because there is no pie crust to fuss over, and no complicated pastry patterns on the top. Crisp takes shorter to make, in my opinion, and tastes just as good if not better, depending on your taste.
Step 1: Ingredients
Ingredients (fills a 7x11 baking dish)
¾ cup flour
¾ cup oats
¾ cup brown sugar
¾ teaspoon baking powder
½ teaspoon cinnamon
Pinch of Salt
½ cup butter, chilled
5 large apples
4 Tablespoons butter, melted
3 tablespoons flour
3 tablespoons milk
1 teaspoon vanilla
⅓ cup brown sugar
1 teaspoon cinnamon
Pinch of Salt
Step 2: The Topping
Preheat oven to 375 degrees.
Mix ¾ cup flour, oats, ¾ cup brown sugar, baking powder, ½ teaspoon cinnamon, and salt in a small bowl. Cut in the cold butter with a pastry cutter or knife/fork until the mix resembles coarse crumbs. Place in fridge to chill until using.
Step 3: Cut Core Peel
Cut, core, and peel the apples, using a special apple-corer-peeler-slicer tool if you have one, and place in a large bowl.
Step 4: Filling
In a small bowl, mix the melted butter, flour, milk, vanilla, ⅓ cup brown sugar, and 1 teaspoon of cinnamon.
Step 5: Mix It UP
Pour this filling mixture over the apples and stir until the apples are completely coated.
Step 6: Pan It
Pour this apple mixture into a 7x11 pan (or pan of similar proportions), and smooth evenly.
Remove the topping mixture from the fridge, and sprinkle uniformly over the apple mixture.
Step 7: Bake It
Bake in preheated oven for 40-45 minutes, until browned and mixture is boiling.
Step 8: Enjoy!
Remove from oven, and let cool a bit before consuming.
