Introduction: Apple Watch Bike Mount

Yesterday it occurred to me that someone must have already come up with a way to mount their Smart Watch to their bicycle handlebars. If possible, the Watch now becomes the off-wrist Cycling Computer viewable while keeping both hands on the bars.

Supplies

We're going either to the basement or the Depot for one of these.

Step 1:

I was thinking along the lines of the Topeka hardware cases and mount system that I had for my phones. You know, brackets, clips, magnets, whatever. So here are are some of those available. They range in price from like $10 to $60+. I kinda like the one that looks like a Ring Pop.

Besides the Bracket mount style there is the Wrap Around style (shown in the "3 more images" tab). This allows the watch band to remain on the watch.

Step 2:

Let's make a Wrap Around Mount. Cut a 35mm slice off of the insulation tube. A Japanese razor type saw works great. This width seemed good for my 41mm Series 8 Apple Watch. Adjust for your watch size.

Step 3:

Put the slice over the handlebar. Almost all handlebars are 1" (25.4mm) in diameter so the foam slice is a good snug fit. Strap your watch on. For me, the second to last hole on this $4.99 eBay silicone watch band was just right. I didn't need it but, for additional friction between the foam and the handlebar, use blue painters tape around the handlebar first.

Step 4:

Your watch is attached in a secure, cushioned way using the strength of the watch band to hold it all together.

Spin it around to a comfortable viewing angle from the cockpit then take a ride!

There is this article that talks about bike mounts but also details the settings to make on an Apple Watch so the display works properly off wrist: https://theapplewatchtriathlete.com/blog-1/2018/3/29/the-best-bike-mounts-for-apple-watch.
