Introduction: Arctic Monkeys - Tranquility Base Hotel + Casino Artwork
In 2018 Arctic Monkeys made an album called "Tranquility Base Hotel + Casino". Being an Arctic Monkeys fan myself, upon first listening to this album I wasn't sure how I felt about it. The album has a very unique sound and is quite the departure from their previous album 'AM'. However, every time I have listened to this album since, I love it more and more, so much so that it has in fact become my favourite Arctic Monkeys album. I love the sound, the story the lyrics tell, and I also love the artwork.
Talking about artwork, I decided to attempt to re-create the album artwork myself and use it as decoration. In this instructable I will do my best to show you how I did this.
Thanks to Instagram user @santiago109 for drawing out the plans for the artwork.
- 4x MDF panel (3mm thickness) 30 x 60cm
- 1x MDF panel (9mm thickness) 30 x 60cm
- White paint primer
- White paint
- Sanding paper
- 2x tenting stick (or something similar)
- Contact glue
Step 1: Lasercutting the Pieces
Using the plans created by Instagram user @santiago109 I created 5 svg files in inkscape that were used to lasercut the MDF pannels in the right pieces. The base of the hotel is cut from the 9mm MDF, the other pieces were cut from the 3mm panels.
I wasn't sure on the thickness of the little pieces in between the floors of the hotel so I cut them in different sizes. I ended up using the smallest cube ones.
After getting home with the cut pieces, I loosely assembled them to see what the result would look like.
Step 2: Gluing the Floor Connectors
After cutting the pieces I started by gluing the little cubes in the right places. I used contact gluen. Glue both sides, let them dry for approximately 10 minutes and then press them together. Repeat this step quite a few times until all pieces are glue together.
For painting purposes, I waited with gluing the floors together until they were painted.
Step 3: Painting Primer
To ensure a nice coat of paint, I started by using a white primer. Painted both sides and let dry. The connectors in between the floors are useful to let the pieces dry. For the pieces without the little connectors and the cylinders I used some rope to let them dry on a drying rack.
Step 4: Sanding and Painting
After the primer has fully dried, I lightly sanded the surfaces and applied the white paint on both sides. Repeat these steps until you are happy with the result. I added two coats of white paint on most parts and then added some finishing touches on some parts that needed it.
Step 5: Glueing It All Together
After all the paint has fully dried, I glued all the parts together two by two until the whole this was assembled.
Step 6: Finishing
After gluing it all together and adding the cylinders for the rotating floor and sign, this is the finishing product.
