Introduction: Arduino Touchscreen Display

Hello! Today, I will show you how to use a Touchscreen shield with the Arduino Uno. You can use it as a small display for quotes or pictures or all kinds of other stuff.

Step 1: Parts

You will need:

  • Arduino Uno
  • Seeed Studios TFT Shield
  • USB Cable
  • Micro SD Card

That's all you need. You can get the TFT shield at for 50 dollars. After you get the shield, put the micro SD card into the small slot on the bottom. Now your TFT shield I ready for use. Plug it into your Arduino Uno and set up the download the files listed below.

You will need this software and these files as well:

  • Arduino IDE
  • TFT_Touch_Shield_v2-master-2 library ( this can be downloaded from the seeed studios wiki)
  • Any kind of zip file converter

Step 2: Run Your First TFT Program

Now that you have all the parts and software, open the Arduino IDE and open the

TFT_Touch_Shield_v2-master-2 library. Open the examples and find the first program labeled "drawCircle". Once you have opened that program, read all of the side notes so you can understand the commands and how to use them. Upload the program to your board. The Touchscreen should display 4 circles, 2 filled in and 2 outlines. If it did, Congratulations! You just ran your first TFT program.

Step 3: Adding On

Hopefully you read the side notes, so you know how to use the commands in the "drawCircle" program. Now you need to apply what you know by changing pararmeters in some of the commands, so you can see what happens when you do so. Try changing cooridintaes, size and color of the circles on the screen. Here is what I did after I learned how change the commands:

Tft.fillCircle(120, 120, 10, BLUE);

If you did all of that, then it is time to move on. Look at some of the other examples learn how to use them together. You should probably study the programs that draw shapes or figures (e.g. "drawRectangle" or "drawNumbers").

Step 4: Adding on Contd.

Once you have mastered creating shapes on the screen, you should move on to learning about displaying images (drawbmp1&2) and about how to draw on the screen (paint). Well, that's pretty much it.     Well the shield itself takes up all of the I/O pins, so you would need use a different TFT shield that would leave some of the pins open.
