Introduction: Atv Front Dive Shaft U Joint Replacment

Have you broken a front drive shaft on your ATV? Well, I have an instructable for you. This instructable will show you what you are gonna need and how you gonna do it.

Note-If you want to replace the whole front drive shaft it is the same steps but you have to do everything twice for each side.

Supplies

For this project, you are going to need the following;

  1. WD-40
  2. Needle nose pliers
  3. Hammer
  4. Atv Front Dive shaft U joint
  5. An Atv that is a shaft drive, not a belt or chain drive.

Step 1: The Removal

The First step in this U joint replacement is to remove the old/ broken u joint. This section will be a step-by-step instruction showing you how to remove the u joint.

Remove the 2 retaining clips from the u joint on each side of the cross joint.

There will be 2 retaining clips on the u joint on the side that connects to the dif/engine. You will have to use a plier, I found it the easiest of all the tools I had available.

Next, you have to get rid of the 2 sleeves on the side of the u joint. These sleeves are on the joint connected to the drive shaft/engine. You will have to take a hammer a push it one way till it pops off, Then hit it the other till the other one pops off.

Loosen the bolts holding the differential and slide the dif forward.

Remove the U Joint front of the joint by pulling

Inside the U joint, there will be a spring remove it by….

Step 2: The Acquisition

Procure the U joint, If it is a Yamaha it will be called a Cross Joint. These can be a bit pricy so I would recommend getting a third party, Although I wasn’t able to find one for my quad, I bought one from Yamaha for $325 but that doesn't come with all the other hardware (Clips and caps).

Step 3: The Replacment

It is the same steps as the

Depending if you have a spring in the U joint take the spring from the old one and put it in the new one.

Slide the U Joint onto the drive shaft.

Then place the join between the joint connected to the engine/Diff. Slide the Sleaves on the side of the U joint ( The Joint that is connected to the engine or Differential.

Replace the 2 retaining clips back on the U joint on the side that doesn’t have the retaining clips.

You will have to take off the other U joint on the other side of the Driveshaft to get the drive shaft into the 2 U Joints.

When you put the yokes drive shaft make sure the 2 yokes connected to the drive shaft are facing the same way, If they are not the same, it will cause it to shake.

Step 4: The Conclusion

Congrats if you followed these instructions you should have fixed your quad, now go on and rip.
