Introduction: BOOKCASE DOOR THAT REPLACES YOUR DOOR.
90 PERCENT OF THESE BOOKS WERE WATER DAMAGED!!!!!!!
I DONT CONDONE DESTROYING BOOKS!!!!!!!!!!
IV WANTED TO BUILD THIS DOOR FOR YEARS BUT DIDNT WANT TO RUIN A BUNCH OF BOOKS. SO I FINALY FOUND SOME WATER DAMAGED BOOKS THAT NO ONE WOULD WANT TO READ. THATS THE HARDEST PART OF THIS PROJECT. I CUT ALL THE BOOKS THEN SUN BATHED THEM FOR A FOR DAYS TO DRY THEM AND TAKE ANY SMELL OUT. YOU COULD JUST GO TO A LIBRARY BOOK SALE AND GET BAGS OF BOOKS FOR ABOUT $2 A BAG, BUT PEOPLE FROWN UPON DESTROING BOOKS SO TRY TO FIND DAMAGED ONES IF YOU CAN.
YOU CAN REUSE YOUR DOOR OR BUILD A NEW ONE LIKE I DID. IF YOU REUSE YOUR DOOR ITS A MATER OF ADDING MORE WOOD AND BOOKS TO IT.
Step 1: Cutting Your Wood.
cut 1 1/2" x 3/4 pieces to make a frame around your door. [make sure you leave enough space on the latch side, that the door will shut and not hit on the jam.] measure the books you get to determin where you put the next piece of wood.
Step 2: Cutting the Books
cutting the books is not fun! but if you have a-
table saw
shopvac
dust mask
you can do this fairly easy. set your fence on the saw to 1 1/4" hook up your shop vac to the saw, put on you dust mask. and start cutting the books with the bind of the book to the fence, you will have to empty the shopvac about 5 times depending on the size of the vac. IF YOU TRY TO CUT THESE IN A CLOSED AREA WITHOUT A SHOPVAC AND MASK YOU WILL NOT BE ABLE TO BREATH!!! I KNOW CAUSE I DID IT.
Step 3: Stain Your Wood
stain or paint all your wood pieces and attach them with glue and nails. if your building a new door stain everything. MAKE SURE YOU MATCH THE STAIN OR PAINT OF YOUR DOOR JAM. then clear your wood with a varnish or polyurathane.
Step 4: Glue the Books on the Door.
glue the books on the door making sure to dry fit them first useing pl400 or some other very good glue.
i used a lever handle so i could hollow out the book i wanted to use as the handle. i then drilled the handle and attached with screws. if you dont have a lever handle you could get creative with 2 books or somthing.
Step 5: Hanging the Door
now you can rehang the door but keep in mind your door will be much heavier and you may need to add a heavier duty hinge.
now it should look somthing like mine or better! and the inside of your door will look just like a door.
Step 6: HANDLE IN THE WALL
My bedroom is very small, and after hanging the door i hit my arm on the book handle a few times. so i came up with this idea to make the handle go into the wall, and gain about 3" of walk space.
i just marked the wall were the handle hit the wall, and built a box that fit around the handle. cut out the wall and slid in the box with a little glue on it. then mounted a wall bumper on the wall down low.
this could be added to about any door that you needed more walk space.
THANKS FOR CHECKING OUT MY INSTRUCTABLE!

Love it. There is nothing wrong with re-purposing books old and new. There is no shortage of old books.

I love this idea & going to put it in a house I'm flipping. I've been collecting damaged books for awhile now for this project. Thanks a bunch for sharing.
ps..., I'm an avid reader & this is a cool way to re-purpose old, damaged books...

Gander: A gander is an adult male goose. :-) I made the same assumption. :-)
By the way, I'm a Buddhist, if you have damaged religious books the right thing to do with them is burn them. The whole book destroying thing is just a meme. People don't think for themselves unfortunately they see a book being destroyed and they think you're a Nazi. You can't win with people! They've made their minds up before they read a word. It's just paper after all not a puppy. I love this idea though. I always wanted to build a wardrobe around my bedroom door. Just imagine the confusion on your date's face in the morning. LOL. I never did it though the room was only just big enough for the door to have a handle. Eventually I took off the the door handle and the frame around the door, papered the door and where the frame was and painted the whole thing to match the rest of the room. Not quite as exciting as a wardrobe but it made me smile. :-)

yea, i know gander is a male but the nick name was given to me by coworkers 20 years ago. a lot of people think its from the Top gun movie. i thought it was given to me just cause it rhymed with my name Bruce. i didnt mind the nick name and thought it could be worse. years later i found out it was given to me cause i was being lazy out side walking around kicking dirt, smoking a cigarette and somebody seen me and said i looked like a goose. now i have a goose tattoo, i just started my company called Goose remodeling.
Maybe i can change my nick name to The Book Nazi.
(NO BOOKS FOR YOU!) lol
Thanks for the comment- The Goose

What a great idea! And if you don't have damaged books, you could just use really bad books. You'd be doing the world a favour by getting rid of some of them. I'm going to make a door out of Twilight books! :p

Couldn't you have made it an actual bookshelf? Better than killing books i think.
Reply 13 years ago on Introduction
NO. If you read the intro, you will know why.
Reply 11 years ago on Introduction
Anne Frank did a pretty good job with an actual bookshelf. Just saying.
