Baby Jellyfish - Fun Beginner Crochet Animal

This is the most fun I had with crochet by far - it's quick to make and beginner friendly.

I tied  blue jellyfish to my backpack and it looks absolutely adorable.

You could also use them on your keychain or even make a bunch of them and use them as baby crib hanging toys.

1. Magic ring: SC 6x [6]
2. INC 6x [12]
3. (SC, INC) 6x [18]
4. SC 18x [18]
5. SC 18x [18]
6. DEC (into back loop only) 9x [9]

SC: Single Crochet

INC: Increase

DEC: Decrease

Supplies

• Yarn
• Crochet hook (size is marked on your yarn) - mine was 3.0
• Black embroidery thread & needle or safety eyes

Step 1: Magic Ring

Create a magic ring with 6 single crochet stitches. 

Step 2: Increase 6X [12]

Increase every stitch that you have - you should have 12 stitches at the end of this circle.

Step 3: (single Crochet, Increase) 6X [18]

Create a single crochet stitch into the first stitch and increase the next. Repeat 6 times. You should have 18 stitches at the end of this circle.

Step 4: Single Crochet 18X [18]

Create a single crochet stitch into each stitch. You should still have 18 stitches at the end of this circle.

Step 5: Single Crochet 18X [18]

Again create a single crochet stitch into each stitch. You should still have 18 stitches at the end of this circle.

After you complete this line you should sew on the eyes. I used black embroidery thread and needle. If you have access to safety eyes feel free to use those. The result might be even better.

Step 6: Decrease (back Loop Only) 9X [9]

Decrease your loops, but work only into the back loop (the one inside the circle). Repeat 9 times. 

Finish the row off with a single crochet stitch, cut your yarn at about 15 cm, and pull it through the last loop (so it doesn’t come loose).

Step 7: Beginning Thread

Put your hook through the jellyfish head and pull your beginning thread to the inside. 

Don’t cut it off, we will use it as a filling. Same goes for all the other thread ends that will follow in next steps.

Step 8: Chains (8x)

We will make 8 chains for jellyfish arms / tentacles. Make chains of different lengths: between 8 - 13 chain stitches.

Leave the yarn uncut at one end (long enough that you will be able to tie two and two together later), and knot the other.

Attach the tentacles into the last row of decreases using crochet hook - space them evenly, alternating between different lengths. Push the thread ends to the inside.

Step 9: Closing

If you feel that you have enough filling you can close it off, otherwise feel free to add some more yarn into it or the stuffing that you usually use.

Close the hole using decrease stitches, and tie at the end. Pull the loose thread inside of the head.
