Introduction: "Broken" Bandsaw Box

In this instructable I will show you how to make a bandsaw box. A bandsaw box is an ornate jewelry or trinket box made mostly on a bandsaw. They are fun to make and don't take many materials.

Tools Needed:
Bandsaw (with a rip fence)
Belt Sander
Drill press with a drum sander

Materials Needed:
wood
Felt

Step 1: Prepare Your Wood

You will need a piece of wood three to four inches thick. If you happen to have a chunk of a 4 by 8 beam lying around like I did, you're in luck. If not, just glue some boards together so you have the correct thickness. Now you need to find a template to glue to your board. You can draw one like I did or find one one on the Internet. Once you have the template ready, glue it onto your wood. I used a glue stick because it comes off easily without leaving a lot of residue. Since my board was so big, I cut it smaller so it was easier to work with.

Here is my template.

Step 2: Cut It Out

This step is fairly self explanatory. Cut out the shape of the box. DO NOT cut out the drawers yet.

Step 3: Cut the Back

Set your fence to a half inch away from the blade. Then cut the back off and set it aside for later.

Step 4: Cut Out the Drawers

Now you can cut the drawers out. Make sure to make the cut as clean as possible. Don't make relief cuts or anything like that.

Step 5: Put the Back On

Take the slice you cut off the back of the box and glue it back on. Make sure you glue it onto the same side you cut it off. Once the glue is dry, sand it down so it is even.

Step 6: Make the Drawers

First, cut both ends off each drawer. Save them. Now draw the shape you want the inside of the drawers to be on the drawer pieces. Cut them out. Sand the inside of the drawers with the drum sander that's on the drill press. Once you are satisfied that the inside of your drawers is smooth, glue them back together.

Step 7: Make the Handle

To make the handle, I found an oak scrap that was long and thin. I cut out the rough shape on my band saw and sanded it to the correct shape on my disc sander. To make it easier to grip, I sanded one of the back edges down at an angle .

Step 8: Attach the Handle

If your box isn't "split" , just glue the handle on where you want it. If you used my design, or one similar, align the drawers like they were one drawer. Make sure there is some space between them. Put some glue on the handle and place it so it is half on one drawer and half on the other. Once the glue is dry, cut the access handle off.

Step 9: Add Finish

I finished mine with Watco danish oil. I like it because it makes the wood really pop. You can finish the box with anything, though.

Step 10: Line the Drawers With Felt

I decided to line the drawers with felt. It makes them nicer for storing jewelry or trinkets.

Step 11: Done!

Congratulations! You've made a bandsaw box! If you use my design, post a picture of it in the comments.
