Introduction: Bat Tie Dye Shirt
Learn how to make a bat tie dye shirt. Perfect for Halloween, this tie dye bat design is a fun way to show off your Halloween spirit! It does require some sewing skills, but it's a great beginner project for those just learning how to sew.
To make it easy to make this bat shirt and other Halloween tie dye shirts, I've made a free printable tie dye template.
Supplies
- 1 White Cotton Shirt
- Washable Markers Orange and Green
- 1 Needle and Thread
- Rubber Bands or Zip Ties
- 1 Small Clamp or Clothespin
- 1 Tie Dye Kit or Tie-Dye Dye and Soda Ash
- Water
- 1 pair Rubber Gloves
- Plastic Wrap
- Paper Towels
Step 1:
Fold the shirt in half and draw half of a bat design using a washable marker. You can also use this downloadable template to make the bat tie dye design. Simply print it out, cut it, and trace around it.
Step 2:
Use a needle and thread to sew a long running stitch along the outline.
Step 3:
Wet the shirt and squeeze out the excess water.
Carefully pull on the threads – this will make the folds in the shirt. Tie off the ends.
Step 4:
Add rubber bands along the marker lines to secure the bat section.
Step 5:
Scrunch the rest of the shirt and wrap it with rubber bands or zip ties. Then soak it in a soda ash solution (1 cup soda ash to 1 gallon of water)
Step 6:
Place plastic wrap on the table and put on gloves.
Cover it in black dye.
Step 7:
Wrap it up in the plastic wrap and let it set for at least 6 hours, but I recommend 24 hours.
Step 8:
Rinse the shirt and remove the rubber bands. Then wash it in the washing machine and dry. Then your shirt is ready to wear!
